MANILA – The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas said it was not compelling banks to keep their doors open to the public amid the heavy rains that caused floods aross Metro Manila and wide swathes of Luzon.
“Banks are, to the extent possible, given the adverse weather, servicing the needs of clients. ATMs are being replenished in non-flooded areas,” BSP Governor Amando M. Tetangco Jr. said.
Tetangco said the Bankers Association of the Philippines was keeping tabs of the situation, and was trying to “balance their obligation to serve the public and to safeguard the security of their personnel.”
Pascual M. Garia III, Philippine Savings Bank president, said all its ATMs were open except in areas where electricity had been cut off because of the floods.
In a statement, the thrift unit of Metrobank said branches in Metro Manila were ordered closed.
PSBank has more than 200 branches across the country and more than 500 ATMs.
