MANILA - Puregold Price Club Inc. on Friday said demand for relief goods is surging, as the country’s second fastest-growing retailer announced that only one of its stores remains closed because of the massive flooding in Metro Manila and nearby provinces.
In a disclosure to the Philippine Stock Exchange, the Lucio Co-led retailer said all the other Puregold, S&R and Parco stores are fully operational, after five stores that closed at the height of the monsoon rains reopened their doors to the public.
The outlets were closed because the selling areas and store vicinity were flooded and the staff unable to report for work, Puregold said.
It said power outages also had no impact on operations, as the outlets had standby generators.
The five S&R stores in Metro Manila and Pampanga also stayed open despite the floods.
In anticipation of the upsurge in purchases by residents in the affected areas, Puregold and Parco stores have buffer stocks of goods and merchandises enough for 15 to 30 days.
"However, there is a need to replenish fast-moving relief goods such as sardines, instant noodles, rice, bottled water and eggs. The merchandising and store people of Puregold had adequately addressed this situation," the company said.
Puregold said its stores have maintained their selling prices at levels prior to the onslaught of the monsoon rains.
Parking areas of the Puregold store in San Mateo, Rizal and the Parco store in Nangka, Marikina City were also transformed into staging areas for the evacuation of affected residents.
Puregold said it likewise donated groceries and rice for the feeding programs undertaken by civic organizations for the flood victims.
