MANILA – The government will make available P100 million in crop insurance to farmers whose crops were damaged by the floods spawned by Typhoon Gener and the Southwest monsoon rains.
Agriculture Secretary Proceso Alcala said state-run Philippine Crop Insurance Corp. will pay insurance within 20 days to encourage farmers to replant.
Citing the agency’s field reports as of August 8, Jovy Bernabe, PCIC president, estimated crop insurance claims at P98.73 million.
Benefiting from the insurance are 8,613 farmers, of whom 97 percent planted rice. The remaining were corn farmers.
The insured area runs to 14,711 hectares - 14,260 hectares of rice and 451 hectares of corn.
As of August 9, damage to the agriculture sector in 19 provinces was pegged at P167.90 million, covering losses from rice, corn, high value crops, livestock and fisheries, as well as infrastructure.
