MANILA - Despite massive floods that inundated a wide swathe of Luzon last week, the Department of Agriculture still expects palay production to hit a record in the first half of this year.
DA Assistant Secretary Dante Delima, who is also National Rice Program coordinator, said the agency expects palay harvest to increase 3-5 percent in the first six months of this year from 7.58 million metric tons a year ago.
“This is based on the NRP’s data. But we are still waiting for the official figures that will come from the Bureau of Agricultural Statistics. It is safe to say that we hit record high, or at least three to five percent increase in production,” Delima said, citing good weather during the first semester.
DA Secretary Proceso Alcala earlier said last week's monsoon-induced flooding is unlikely to drag down farm output in the third quarter as the harvest season was over even before the torrential rains struck.
