MANILA - Smart Communications Inc. plans to expand the coverage of its fourth generation mobile broadband service to other key cities around the country by the end of the year.

In a briefing, Rolando Peña, head of PLDT-Smart Technology Group, told reporters that the 4G service using long-term evolution technology will initially be available in certain areas in Metro Manila, particularly Makati, Ortigas and Katipunan in Quezon City; Baguio, Cebu, Davao and Boracay.

On August 25, Smart will launch its 4G mobile broadband commercial service after a year of testing LTE in various parts of the country.

Emmanuel Lorenzana, Smart wireless consumer division head, said LTE is particularly suited for bandwidth-heavy applications that require real-time delivery of video services.

Smart's LTE service is capable of delivering data wirelessly at speeds of up to 42 megabits per second. This makes possible downloading large files in minutes instead of hours, streaming high definition videos with no buffering, and playing online games wit no lag because of its high speed and low latency.

"LTE provides the cutting edge for our mobile broadband network which is also equipped with HSPA+, HSPA and 3G facilities," Lorenzana said.

He said this combination of wireless broadband technologies enables Smart to provide customers with unmatched mobile broadband services in more parts of the country.

Smart's LTE deployment was made possible by the Philippine Long Distance Telephone Co.'s P67.1 billion network upgrade, which has replaced equipment in all of Smart's 9,500 base stations nationwide with 4G-ready facilities.

This program has also strengthened the PLDT Group's fiber optic network and overseas fiber optic cable system to ensure that high-speed broadband services offered through LTE will be fully supported.
