MANILA - The Department of Energy cleared the coal handling operations at the Harbour Centre Port along Manila Bay.
Undersecretary Jose M. Layug, Jr. said a team the agency sent to conduct an ocular inspection of the privately-owned port verified the facility's compliance with environmental regulations on the handling of coal.
"Harbour Centre Port Terminal Inc. has necessary standards and measures to minimize impact of stockpile to the environment," Layug said.
Agham party-list Rep. Angelo Palmones earlier called for a probe of the coal operations at the Manila Harbour Centre, which he claimed violated environmental laws.
The legislator made an expose last July on 40,000 metric tons of coal stockpiled at the port that allegedly polluted Manila Bay and the air in nearby areas.
Upon its inspection, the DOE however found Manila Harbour Centre's coal operations maintained no such stockpile.
Layug said the port operator only stores coal in its facilities after the commodity is unloaded from barges and then shipped or transported to other destinations.
"They deliver it to the port, usually from three to five days kinukuha na nung broker so we have not seen unnecessarily unusual stockpile, no irregularity," he said.
