MANILA - Maynilad Water Services Inc. on Tuesday said it is repairing leaks at a faster rate than before the water concessionaire was re-privatized in 2007.
In a statement, Maynilad said it has repaired 141,510 pipe leaks since the launch of its Non-Revenue Water Reduction Program in 2008. About P710 million was spent for the company’s leak repair operations.
For this year alone, Maynilad repaired over 31,000 leaking pipes as of August, already within reach of its average repair rate of 40,000 leaks a year.
Before the Metro Pacific Investments Corp.-DMCI Holdings consortium took over the utility in 2007, the company's leak repair was only at a rate of 9,000 per year.
Also a major component of Maynilad’s NRW Reduction Program is the replacement of old pipelines. Sine 2008, Maynilad has replaced a total of 877 kilometers of pipes in different areas of the concession.
The utility's program to repair leaks and replace old pipes contributed to the recovery of 569 million liters per day as of last month.
Maynilad said the recovered supply is used in supplying potable water to previously unserved areas in the south of its concession.
“Maynilad inherited very old pipelines when water services were first privatized, which is why we have invested heavily in pipe replacements and leak repairs. Thankfully, these investments now show results in terms of recovered water that we now use to reach other people who need our services,” Ricky P. Vargas, Maynilad president, said.
Maynilad is the concessionaire of the Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System for the West Zone of Metro Manila and parts of Cavite.
