MANILA – State-run Metro Rail Transit Authority on Friday warned commuters of long queues at MRT Line 3 because of a shortage of magnetic tickets.
Al Vitangcol III, MRT 3 general manager, told Interaksyon.com, that there is a "shortage" of magnetic tickets, thus stored value tickets are unavailable in most stations.
Vitangcol said the company already ordered 1.5 million magnetic tickets to address the problem.
"We expect the delivery of the tickets within 30 days," he said.
Available data from MRTA showed that 54.81 million commuters took the MRT 3 in the first four months of this year, or 8.79 percent more than the 50.38 million a year ago.
This translated to an average daily ridership of 456,755 this year, higher than the railway’s capacity of 350,000 a day. The MRT 3 capacity had been breached as early as 2006. Total ridership reached 158.81 million last year, up 3.6 percent from 15316 million in 2010.
MRTA earned P672.44 million in the first four months of this year, up from P621.23 million in the same period last year.
At present, the rail system has a fleet of 73 Czech-made air-conditioned rail cars, of which up to 60 three-car trains operate daily.
The trains run at a maximum speed of 65 kilometers per hour to cover the rail system’s 13 stations in about 30 minutes, including short dwell times of about 25 to 35 seconds in each station.
