MANILA - Ateneo De Manila University would rather settle any differences with Philex Mining Corporation chairman Manuel V. Pangilinan in private, officials of the Jesuit-run school said on Friday.
This, after a letter Pangilinan wrote to Ateneo president Fr. Jett Villarin, SJ, went public on Friday. According to an Ateneo official, Villarin received Pangilinan's email detailing the businessman's decision to "disengage" from his alma mater, citing "irreconcilable" differences over mining and the Reproductive Health Bill.
Ateneo has been at the forefront of civil society opposition to mining, and has backed the Catholic Church's bid to shelve the RH Bill.
The Ateneo official said Villarin has responded to Pangilinan's email. The university, however, would rather not detail its president's response to the businessman, the source said.
"Best that this is handled through quiet conversation," the source said.
Pangilinan's letter to Villarin was shared online with members of the Ateneo Alumni community by Philex vice president for business development Denis Lucindo.
Pangilinan also chairs TV5, for which InterAksyon.com is the online news portal.
