MANILA - The battle among Philippine airlines over the international market is expected to heat up as more carriers file applications at the Civil Aeronautics Board.
Cebu Air Inc, operator of Cebu Pacific, has asked CAB to reallocate an additional 1,260 weekly seats to Taiwan from the unused seat entitlements assigned to rival Philippine Airlines (PAL).
The additional seat entitlements were assigned to PAL under the 1996 Manila Economic and Cultural Office-Taipei Economic Cultural Office confidential memorandum of understanding between the governments of the Philippines and Taiwan.
Cebu Pacific early this month announced it would fly to Dubai from Manila starting October 7, the budget airline's first long-haul destination. Cebu Pacific also plans to fly to Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Oman.
The budget airline of PAL, on the other hand, will compete with Cebu Pacific, as Airphil Express is asking CAB for authority to fly to Kuwait.
The airline is seeking three weekly frequencies between Manila and Kuwait, using Airbus A330 aircraft. AirPhil will also fly to Sandakan in Malaysia.
In a separate filing, PAL is opposing the application of Air Micronesia to operate two additional flights on the Manila-Guam route and vice versa using a B737 aircraft.
Air Micronesia wants additional flights during Tuesdays and Sundays. At present, Air Micronesia flies between Manila and Guam every Monday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
PAL also has a pending application to fly from Manila to Moscow, Turkey, Kuwait and Cambodia.
Earlier, Southeast Asian Airlines (Seair) filed applications before the CAB to fly from Manila to Incheon, Gimpo, Busan and Jeju in Korea. Seair also wants to operate from Manila to Kaohsiung and Taipei in Taiwan. In addition, the airline is seeking approval to fly from Manila to Jakarta, Surabaya and Denpasar in Indonesia.
