MANILA - The Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) is warning the public of fake phone calls claiming to come from the bureau and alleging the receiver had pending tax liabilities.

In a statement, the BIR said certain parties misrepresenting themselves as belonging to the Office of the Deputy Commissioner-Operations Group had been calling tax payers to inform them of outstanding liabilities.

One incident involved a call informing the receiver of a "tax difference" with the alphabetical list of employees. Upon checking with the BIR, the victim was informed that the calls did not come from said office.

The latest fake call was made to a tax payer whom the deputy commissioner personally knows.

The BIR said the modus operandi involves the fake callers advising the receiver to call numbers like 387-44-16, 703-99-54, 408-39-47 to settle the liabilities.

"These numbers do not belong to the BIR, thus, if one day you are also a victim, please ask for documentary proof of the BIR assessment or letter and determine the identity of the caller and report the same to the nearest law enforcement office like the police or the NBI," the BIR said.

BIR Commissioner Kim S. Jacinto-Henares, through Revenue Memorandum Circular No. 6-2013, advised taxpayers to hire tax agents or practitioners who are accredited by the bureau.
