It’s final and the reason is spinal: Angel Locsin loses Darna role

Angel Locsin.

It’s final. Star Cinema’s long-delayed “Darna” project will take flight without Angel Locsin.

ABS-CBN, Star Cinema, and Angel Locsin have mutually arrived at a final decision that she will no longer pursue the ‘Darna’ movie due to her medical condition,” according to a joint statement issued on Monday.

The actress, 31, had been tapped to play the title role as early as four years ago but was sidelined by a spine injury in late 2015. ABS-CBN’s film studio waited for her to recover, but recently her doctor decided she was unfit for “strenuous activities.”

“We gave Angel our full support during and after her treatment in hopes that she would portray the iconic Filipino heroine. Because of Angel’s passion and dedication, she resumed training for the movie after undergoing surgery and therapy for the disc bulge in her spine,” the statement explained.

“Unfortunately, Angel experienced back pain twice during training, prompting her doctor to advise her not to participate in strenuous activities to avoid permanent damage on her spine.

“We would have loved to see Angel fly again as Darna and take our hats off to her for the gargantuan efforts she has put in for the project,” the statement added.

Angel shot to stardom in 2005 when she played the iconic Mars Ravelo character in a GMA Network series. She transferred to ABS-CBN in 2007.

Since she injured her spine two years ago, other ABS-CBN actresses have been mentioned as possible replacements, including Liza Soberano, Jessy Mendiola, Nadine Lustre, and even Miss Universe Pia Wurtzbach.

Erik Matti, who will direct the movie, seems to prefer Liza for the lead role but said the decision is all up to Star Cinema. He said he and his staff had already done tons of pre-production work.

In lieu of the Darna role, Angel is slated to work on other projects, including an upcoming series with Kathryn Bernardo and Daniel Padilla, a series with John Lloyd Cruz, a movie each with James Reid and Coco Martin, and another teleserye.
