Meet ‘The Amazing Race’ contestants, part 1: the favorites
The long wait is over. “The Amazing Race Philippines,” the local version of the most successful and most awarded reality competition ever, is finally going on the air on TV5 this October 29.
Hosted by Kapatid hunk Derek Ramsay, the competition will see 11 pairs going around the country as they vie for the top prize of P2 million. But just as important as the cash prize is the bragging rights that come along with being the very first winners of what could be the first of many seasons for “The Amazing Race Philippines”.
Checking out the playing field, InterAksyon discovered that the competing pairs vary not just in their diversity but also in the stories behind their relationships and, ultimately, their formation as a team.
Some may look more competitive than the others but no one team can be underestimated as it only takes a stroke of good or bad luck to make the difference between finishing first or getting eliminated in this kind of competition.
Here’s a close look at six of the 11 competing teams:
FOOTBALL BROTHERS ARMAND AND ANTON DEL ROSARIO
Azkals fans would love to see the athletic booters take home the bacon in this competition as Armand and Anton looked like they were born for the type of tough tasks that await them on the show. But just because the Fil-Spanish siblings have all the brawn doesn’t mean they don’t have the brains to handle the mental challenges. Anton, for one, has a Business Administration degree from the Notre Dame Namur University in California.
AMIGAS SAIDA DIOLA AND JERVI LI
The race hasn’t even begun and the “besties”are already being talked about. Jervi for supposedly leaving TV show “Eat Bulaga” in a huff (“Not true,” he said) and EB Babes alum Saida for being linked once with Derek (“Also not true,” she said). The way they quickly set the record straight during the TV show’s press conference last week could be a reflection of how fast they think on their feet which should be reason enough for other teams not to underestimate them.
SEXY FRIENDS MISH VAN RUYVEN AND DANI CASTANO
There’s certainly more to them than their drop dead gorgeous figures. Dani represented the country during the 2008 Miss World pageant in South Africa, while Mish is an entrepreneur and a budding events host. Although raised overseas, they do profess a mutual love for local travel and cuisine, which also means that they know enough about the Philippines and its culture. They’re also pretty good at the one thing everyone needs to win the race—run.
CELEBRITY BEST FRIENDS CJ JARAVATA AND LJ MORENO
Their longtime friendship is only half their advantage. A big fan of “The Amazing Race” knows every possible answer to any trivia question about the series, including and especially the rules, CJ was picked by no less than Derek as his teammate of choice if he were going to be a contestant. LJ was one of the formidable players in “Pinoy Fear Factor,” where her stunts included eating a sheep’s brains and eyes and hanging onto a trapeze attached to a moving helicopter. Fearless competitor indeed.
REUNITED FRIENDS GEE “SPEEDY” CANLAS AND SHEENA VERACRUZ
The Philippine All Stars alum (Sheena) and TV presenter (Speedy) both have a dancing background that suggests that they’re fit and agile enough to handle the physical challenges. The real challenge is whether the college BFFs still know and appreciate each other that well. The race will certainly test their friendship to its extreme limits. The bubbly duo admits to having reviewed previous seasons of the show so at least they’ve done their homework.
GYM BUDDIES MARC DUNGO AND KAT TAN
Sharing the same passion for fitness, Marc and Kat obviously have the discipline and temperament to take on this extremely challenging race. Physical tasks are no big deal to them and might be an advantage to people who consider health their priority. But a few things may hinder the power partners: Mark has fear of heights and being in the water for too long. Kat, on the other hand, is very conscious about what she puts inside her body. They may have to conquer those fears if they are to win this thing.
Coming up in part 2:The so-called underdogs featuring a pair of bored housewives, a father and daughter tandem, brothers-in-law who insist that they actually get along very well, a pair of OFWs who also happen to be single dads, and a dating couple who are still both bouncing back from failed relationships.
