Shawn Mendes cites importance of fans in his songwriting process

The minute he announced that he was on his way to Manila for his “Illuminate” world tour happening this Saturday, March 18 at Mall of Asia Arena, Canadian pop star Shawn Mendes immediately trended on social media.

Best known for his brand of acoustic pop as typified by hit singles like “Stitches,” “Treat You Better,” and “Mercy,” the 18 year-old singer-songwriter has captured the imagination of fans worldwide.

Following the modest success of his 2014 EP, his first two full-length releases — “Handwritten” released in 2015 and “Illuminate” released last year — shot to the top of the album charts in the U.S. and his native Canada.

It’s worth noting that Manila is the only South East Asian stop of Shawn’s “Illuminate” world tour which will be followed by the “Popspring 2017” show that he will co-headline with sensational American girl group Fifth Harmony in Japan next weekend.

Not surprisingly, Shawn’s albums have done very well here in the Philippines and during the press conference to promote his Manila concert, he was recognized for the outstanding sales of his first two albums.

MCA Music Philippines CEO Ricky Ilacad and MCA Music Frontline International Marketing Manager Haze Romawac presented Shawn with a triple platinum award for “Handwritten” and a double platinum award for “Illumination.”

Yvonne Yuen, Senior Vice President for Marketing in Universal Music Southeast Asia also presented Shawn with a separate gold and platinum award for the overall sales performance of “Illuminate” and “Handwritten,” respectively.

And while he shot to fame through the covers of his songs that he posted on the short-lived video sharing app, Vine, Shawn insists that it is more important for him to tell his own story through music that he himself created.

“Whether or not you’re just a singer or you write your own music, you’re creating something beautiful through emotion. But I think it’s important that I tell my story because what’s going on with me right now is so amazing,” he explained.

“When I do interviews, I want to explain how I wrote that song. Also, when I’m performing onstage, I get that much more into my songs and have that much more fun.”

Citing the likes of John Mayer, Ed Sheeran, Bruno Mars and Justin Timberlake as his musical influences, Shawn has also expressed his keen interest to collaborate with the likes of Drake and The Weeknd if given the chance.

“I think both of those guys amazing writers and creators of music,” he said.

Overwhelmed by the response of Filipino fans to his music, Shawn recalled that it already felt like a concert when he was greeted by fans he described as “loud” upon his arrival at the airport, as exemplified by these fan tweeted videos.

The singer has had some crazy encounters with admirers, like the time when he was in Madrid, Spain and his vehicle was chased by fans “running between cars in the street.” Still, Shawn underscores the important role they play in his songwriting process.

“When I’m creating music, I think my fans that have met me and get to spend time with me will understand and relate more to what I’m trying to say because they actually do know me as a person… Yes, it’s important for me to make that connection with them so that they will understand my music better,” he pointed out.
