Miss China, Yu Wenxia, beams after being proclaimed Miss World on Saturday
in Ordos, Inner Mongolia, China.
For the second time since 2007, a Chinese beauty won the Miss World title on home soil. China’s Yu Wenxia bagged the crown on Saturday, besting a field of 116 candidates and raising eyebrows around the world.
China has hosted the event six times since 2003. With few exceptions (Hong Kong in 1989, the US in 1991, India in 1996, Poland in 2006, and Indonesia next year), the Miss World pageant is often held in the UK, South Africa, and, yes, China.
Yu also won the Miss World Talent award for performing a Chinese opera number. She defeated four other finalists in the category, including Miss Philippines Queenierich Rehman, whose beatboxing prowess had brought the house down in the talent competition last weekend, impressing Western media outlets Time and The Huffington Post.
The event host Myleen Klass even quipped, before it was announced that Miss China won the talent round, that she wished to learn beatboxing.
Misses India and Mexico were leading when the semifinalists were announced, with Miss China coming in at fifth and Miss Philippines in eleventh place.
Miss India, the statuesque Vanya Mishra, seemed like a lock for the crown after winning two special honors, the Multimedia Award and Beauty With A Purpose.
Needless to say, Yu’s victory did not sit well with most netizens who were certainly not shy in tweeting their reactions after watching the pageant.
