MANILA, Philippines — If you’ve just graduated with a technology-related degree, you’re in luck: people with engineering and technology specializations are the most in-demand types of workers sought by employers here and abroad, according to a recent study of online and print job postings.

In a study of 2.7 million job vacancies posted by companies in online and print media conducted by the job ads website JobStreet.com, it found that engineering and technology specializations are the top specializations for local and overseas jobs.

The study also found that jobs in the IT-enabled services and business process outsourcing (BPO) are the most in-demand types of work among other industries.

JobStreet.com said it expects more than 2 million jobs to become available in 2011, “and with this year’s economic outlook on the upswing, we are expecting at least the same or even more.”

According to a recent report by the government’s Information and Communications Technology Office (ICTO), the local IT industry, particularly the IT outsourcing sector, was one of the “star performers” last year, and is on track to double its global market share by 2016.

The ICTO said the sector generated around 50,000 full-time employment vacancies in 2011, with the Philippines supplying the third largest IT manpower for the Asia Pacific region, next only to China and India.

“Combined with the extensive IT work experience of our workforce, the wide variety of IT skills available and a growing global branding rivaling that of our doctors and nurses, we have the tools and the talent to be a major player in IT outsourcing,” said ICTO Deputy Executive Director Alejandro Melchor III.

Melchor added that Filipino IT workers have a wide range of skill sets that include software development, programming, mobile platform expertise, mainframe skills and database platform proficiency.
