The Moro Islamic Liberation Front was founded in 1977 by the late Ustadz Hashim Salamat after he parted ways with the Moro National Liberation Front led by Nur Misuari.
After the fall of its main headquarters -- Camp Abubakar Assidique, on the boundary of Lanao del Sur and Maguindanao provinces -- the MILF shifted to guerrilla warfare.
Now chaired by Al Hadj Murad Ebrahim, who took over after Salamat’s death, the MILF is reportedly on the verge of reaching a peace agreement with the government.
