Talk ‘N Text center Ali Peek has been cleared by doctors to come back to action less than three weeks after being shot in the neck.
Television personality and former PBA courtside reporter Cesca Litton broke the news on Twitter late Thursday evening, sharing a text message from the hulking PBA veteran: “I’m fully recovered, Cesca. I can play.”
Peek himself confirmed the news in a Twitter message to another friend. “I’m doing great and I just got clearance from the doctor,” he wrote. “I’m fully recovered! God is great!”
The 36-year-old Filipino-American was shot by a still unknown assailant on November 7 after completing a plyometric workout at the RFM Gymnasium in Mandaluyong City.
While a slug remains lodged in his neck, doctors determined that there was no need for surgery to remove it as it did not have any adverse effects on Peek. Dr. Cam Legaspi of Medical City also said that Peek no longer needs any further treatment.
Getting back on the court, according to the doctor, is actually key to Peek’s recovery.
“The psychological and emotional recovery will be longer than the physical recovery,” said Legaspi. “If Ali can get back to normal activity soon, that is the true gauge of success.”
Talk ‘N Text coach Chot Reyes said on Twitter that the clearance to play, however, does not necessarily mean that Peek will be back in action for the Tropang Texters.
“Getting cleared [to play] doesn’t mean that he will,” Reyes wrote. “Only [Peek] can say when he’s ready.”
