Amahit-Sermona shatters women’s hammer throw mark in national games

DUMAGUETE CITY – Loralie Amahit-Sermona shattered the national record in the women’s hammer throw while Katherine Santos bagged two golds in Day 2 of the athletics competition in the 2nd POC-PSC National Games here at the Perdices Sports Complex.

The 30-year old Sermona threw a record-breaking 50.03 meters distance in her third attempt to win the gold and break the old mark of 49.79 which she also registered in the 2007 SEA Games in Thailand.

“Masaya kasi na-prove ko na kaya ko pa,” said Sermona, wife of 10,000-meter ruler Julius Sermona. “Goal ko talaga manalo ng gold sa SEA Games kaya pinagbubutihan ko para makuha iyong chance na ‘yun.”

Equally impressive was 21-year old Santos, who snared the gold medal in triple jump and 100-meter dash.

An incoming HRM senior at University of Baguio, Santos recorded 12.62 meters just in her first attempt in triple jump, which was .05 behind the national mark of London-bound Marestella Torres.

“Gusto ko nga i-break pero sabi ng coach ko huwag na,” said Santos, who minutes after her triple jump attempt went to the century dash event.

The Baguio City native recorded 12.17 seconds in the 100-meter run for her second gold. Laguna’s Hanelyn Loquinto settled for silver with 12.38 time while Krizia Leah Apelar of HyperSports took the bronze on 12.45 clocking.

“Nahirapan ako kasi pagod na rin,” said Santos, bronze medalist in last year’s SEA Games in long event. Santos eyes her third gold today in long jump.

National team member Henry Dagmil was the fastest in men’s category after ruling the 100-meter dash with the time of 10.88 seconds, beating Romnic Herida (11.02) of HyperSports and Iloil’s Joepet Asdolo (11.4).

Romnick Nor ruled the 100-meter dash in boys division while Jenny Rosales topped the girls category of the same event.

Taiwanese Kai Shiang Chen beat defending champion Joebert Delicano in the men’s triple jump. Chen tallied 15.43 meters while Delicano, who won the gold of the same event last year, settled for silver with 15.18 meter distance.

National team member Narcisa Atienza was also a double-gold medalist here after winning the gold in shotput event. She earlier won the high jump.
