Ateneo opens Fr. Martin campaign with easy win

The reigning University Athletic Association of the Philippines champion Ateneo Blue Eagles made their presence last Monday in the 18th Fr. Martin Summer Cup basketball tournament at the Trinity University of Asia gymnasium in Quezon City.

With Sandy Arespacochaga temporarily calling the shots, the Blue Eagles wasted no time in putting away the Lyceum Philippines University Pirates, 66-40, to claim the early leadership in the men’s division.

In the junior action, the San Beda Red Cubs showed how ready they are for the coming Palarong Pambansa next month, and scored their second consecutive win at the expense of the University of the Philippines Integrated School Baby Maroons, 73-50.

Ranbill Tongco fired 14 gamehigh points for the Taytay-based Red Cubs, who are now ahead of the Far Eastern University-FERN Baby Tamaraws and the UAAP junior titlist Ateneo Blue Eaglets.

The Blue Eagles, led by Justine Chua with 10 points, were joined in the lead by the University of Perpetual Help Altas, who trounced Ateneo-B, 73-56.

The Baby Tams prevailed over the STI Junior Olympians, 71-67, while the Blue Eaglets won by forfeiture over St. Stephen High School.
