Ateneo formally ended Far Eastern University’s bid to repeat as champion with a 3-0 victory last Sunday and arranged a finals showdown with University of the East in UAAP Season 74 women’s badminton action at the Rizal Memorial Badminton Hall.
UE reached the finals after scoring a 3-2 victory over De La Salle also over the weekend.
The finals will be played September 20 with the men’s finals between National University and Ateneo starting at 9 a.m. The Ateneo-UE women’s duel starts at 1 p.m.
Fatima Cruz won the tie for the Lady Warriors following her 21-10, 21-15 victory over Danica San Ignacio in the deciding singles match.
Rochelle Andres, a 21-13, 24-22 winner over Danica Bolos in the first singles, and the team of Andres and May Pamorada, 21-17, 21-12 victors over Angelica Ramos and San Ignacio, provided the key victories for UE.
Gelita Castilo and Dia Magno beat the pair Kim Mayono and Jennifer Cayetano, 21-19, 21-18, to clinch the shutout victory for Ateneo.
Lisa Encarnacion defeated Clarissa Pascual, 9-21, 21-14, 24-22, in the first singles and Castilo downed Mayono, 21-10, 21-9, in the second singles to set the Lady Eagles’ up for the shutout..
