Avenido scores 33 to lead Beermen to fifth consecutive win
Leo Avenido scored a season-high 33 points as the San Miguel Beermen defeated the Bangkok Cobras, 86-78, Sunday in a road game to sustain their winning run in the ASEAN Basketball League.
The Beermen extended their winning stream to five games with a win over the Cobras to remain in second place with a 10-3 win-loss card.
Avenido fired six-of-10 from behind the arc to bounce back from his offensive woes. He had a quiet outing against the Singapore Slingers last Wednesday scoring in with only nine points in that game.
Dalron Johnson chipped in 20 points, eight rebounds and six assists. Jarrid Famous added 12 points while Aries Dimaunahan, back from a one-game suspension, had 10 points.
Four players scored in double figures for the Cobras including Filipino imports Marvin Cruz (16) and Jai Reyes (14) but it wasn’t enough for Bangkok.
The Beermen build a 13-2 run in the fourth quarter to push their lead to 81-62 with less than five minutes to play.
Led by three-pointers by Reyes and Kittimon Wanna, the Cobras closed in with a 12-0 run to trail by seven points, 81-74, but sputtered in the end.
