Baguio teenager dominates Olongapo leg of national junior tennis

Neil Tangalin of Baguio City snared two titles after besting his opponents in the finals during the Olongapo leg of 14th SMART Presents the HEAD 2012 junior National Tennis Age-Group Satellite Circuit on over the weekend at the Olongapo Tennis Club.

Tangalin, 14, a former ball boy in the Baguio tennis club, blanked Nico Bongco, 6-2, 6-2, to take home the boys’ 16-under singles crown of the event supported by SMART, Chris Sports, HEAD, Meralco, Maynilad and Toalson.

“I’m so glad to win an event like this and I’m looking for more titles when I compete in the SMART/Head Manila leg next week,” said Tangalin.

He also gained the boys’ 14-under singles crown by ripping Gian Paolo Aquino, 6-0, 6-3, for his second title in the 64-day tournament supported by SMART Communications executive Noel Lorenzana, who plays also tennis.

“It is great to see the young players play with urgency and try their best to win,” said Lorenzana. “I also believe that there are players like Jeson Patrombon and Niño Casey Alcantara will rise up in our prestigious satellite circuit.”

In other results, Juan Paolo Cansino bashed Jerome Silva, 6-1, 6-2, to grab the boys’ 18-under singles crown, while Crizabelle Paulino won against Sister Cristabelle Paulino, 6-2, 2-6, 6-2, for the girls’ 18-under singles crown.

Monivic Santos claimed the girls’ 16-under singles title by routing Alyssa Reyes, 6-2, 6-0, while Jovi Anne Macaraeg whipped Dana Mae Regala, 6-2, 6-4, to win the 14-girls’ under singles crown.

Meanwhile, the last stop of the satellite circuit and the Manila Leg will open this week with more than 500 participants all over the country expecting to join.
