Asi Taulava’s contract with the Meralco Bolts expired when clock struck midnight on Saturday, making him a free agent.
And while Taulava is a year shy of 40, the veteran slotman is not lacking for suitors for free agency.
According to his agent Sheryl Reyes, Taulava has drawn interest from Barako Bull as well as two teams from the ASEAN Basketball League.
Reyes also said that Meralco initially offered Taulava a one-year extension, before newly-installed team manager Butch Antonio sweetened the deal.
“It’s a two-year extension,” Reyes said. “But we told Meralco management that we will consult Asi’s wife first about the offer.”
After a down year, Taulava had a resurgent season, improving on his averages in scoring and rebounding compared to 2010-11 and helping the Bolts claim their first semifinals berth in franchise history in the Governors’ Cup, where he averaged a double-double of 10.8 points and 10.1 rebounds.
