DUMAGUETE CITY – The national men’s and women’s softball teams are using the ongoing POC-PSC National Games to prepare for a major tournament later this year.

Amateur Softball Association of the Philippines (Asaphil) executive director Jun Veloso the Blu Boys and Blu Girls were relegated as guest teams in this annual event to give the other teams equal chance of winning the gold.

But it also serves as a perfect opportunity for both squads to stay competitive in time for international tournaments.

“Last year kasi, we scattered the members of our national team to different LGUs. Now, we decided na isang team sila para makapag-prepare sa ASEAN Championship,” said Veloso.

“And also, we want to give equal chances to all LGUs (local government units) who spent money to bring a complete team here.”

The Blu Girls routed Cebu, 10-0, in their first game at the Siliman University grounds, then notched their second win when Negros Occidental conceded after the first inning.

The Blu Boys, on the other hand, posted a 15-0 win over Lapu-Lapu City and another 15-0 victory against Negros Oriental at the Sibulan Elementary School grounds.

Veloso said the Blu Girls are training here for the ASEAN Softball Championship in Indonesia this coming October.

The Blu Boys are gearing up for the Asian Softball Championship in Japan also around October which will serve as a qualifying tournament for the World Championship next year in New Zealand.

The Blu Girls and Blu Boys are both defending champions in the Southeast Asian Games.
