Bulldogs, Knights win in preseason tilt
National University rode on Ray Parks’ 29 points as the Bulldogs downed last season’s UAAP finalist Far Eastern University, 85-74, Friday in the Fil Oil-Flying V Preseason Hanes Cup at the San Juan Arena.
The Bulldogs, a team which didn’t reached the final four in last season’s UAAP wars, trounced the Tamaraws for their second win of the tournament. The outcome was never in doubt after they had a 42-29 at the half.
NU coach Eric Altamirano, however, downplayed the big win saying that it’s still too early to size up the squad.
“Masaya kami but we also have to keep in mind that it’s still a preseason tournament,” Altamirano said. “Alam natin na hindi pa ‘yan ang laro ng FEU. I hope that the win don’t get into our heads.”
“We are still a work in progress, ang importante, we have to keep on working and maturing in time for the UAAP.”
Parks also had nine rebounds and four assists while Dennis Villamor and Mark De Guzman added 15 points each. Angelo Alolino added 10 points.
Letran, meanwhile, claimed its first win after defeating University of the East, 64-56.
Kevin Alas led the Knights with 17 points but coach Louie Alas mentioned UE’s 24 turnovers as the reason for their victory. “Hindi naman kami nanalo kanina, nag-turnover lang talaga ang UE. We were just lucky na maraming turnovers ang UE,” said Alas.
