Glenn Capacio, who coached the AirAsia Philippine Patriots in the last season of the ASEAN Basketball League, will call the shots for the GlobalPort Batang Pier on an interim basis.
The move comes after team owner Mikee Romero was unable to secure the services of his preferred coaches, Junel Baculi and Jorge Gallent, who coached the businessman’s squads in the amateur ranks.
“Mukhang I cannot get any of them as they’re both tied up with their respective teams,” Romero told InterAKTV.
But Romero said he is still continuing to look at other options.
“I’m on a lookout for a coach who has PBA experience,” said Romero. Capacio has not had head coaching experience in the PBA yet.
GlobalPort bought the PBA franchise of Powerade, acquiring the contracts of its players. But Tigers coach Bo Perasol asked for a release to coach the Ateneo Blue Eagles next season.
Other members of the coaching staff, including Ricky Dandan, will be retained to assist Capacio, according to Romero.
Another assistant, Alex Compton, has signed on with the Alaska Aces.
