Cebu City will be hosting the Philippine national men’s football team’s friendly against Singapore in November, the Azkals’ last match before the 2012 ASEAN Football Federation Suzuki Cup.
Cebu Football Association president Ricky Dakay confirmed that the Azkals will face the Singaporeans on November 16 at the Cebu City Sports Center Football Field.
“We will be ready for such event,” Dakay told InterAKTV. ” (It is) of utmost importance not only to the Cebu football community but to Cebu as a whole.”
The Cebu date will mark the second meeting between the two countries after their scheduled September 7 encounter in Singapore.
The Philippines and Singapore are slowly developing a burgeoning rivalry in regional football. In the 2010 Suzuki Cup, a last-minute goal by Chris Greatwich forced a 1-all draw for the Azkals, jumpstarting a campaign that saw them make the semifinals of the tournament for the first time in history.
Led by naturalized striker Aleksandar Duric, Singapore gained a measure of revenge for that result after scoring a 2-0 victory against the Philippines in a friendly in October 2011.
The Azkals have been drawn with Thailand, Vietnam and the winner of the tournament qualifiers in Group A.
Singapore, a three-time Suzuki Cup titlist, has been drawn with defending champion Malaysia, Indonesia and the runner-up of the qualifiers in Group B of the biennial tournament.
