Cebu dominates dancesport event in national games
DUMAGUETE CITY – Cebu City dominated the dancesport competition of the 2nd POC-PSC National Games here at the Lamberto Macias Coliseum.
The Queen City of the South snared 21 of the possible 30 gold medals in this annual event organized by the PSC with SMART Communications as one of the sponsors.
Cebu City scooped majority of the gold medals in the juvenile, junior and youth categories of the dancesports event, which made its debut this year.
Supported by Dancesports-Team Cebu City, a non-government organization headed by Edward Hayco, the Cebuanos topped almost all of the 30 events to emerge as the winningest team in this event.
Those who won gold for Cebu City were Gylle Nino Diluvio and Anndreah Capampangan (Juvenile E Waltz and Tango Standard), Jury Pagcalibangan and Angela Marie Talata (Juvenile E Cha-Cha and Samba Standard and Latin), Filemon Baguio II and Jhistine Glyde Baguio (Junior C Standard);
Klein Jason Deluvio and Kathlene Joy Deluvio (Junior A and C Standard), John Paul Mocorro and Therese Andre Quilaton (Junior A Latin), Jimmy Noel and Elizabeth Zetz (Senior C Standard and Latin), Lark Jabonero and Mary Ann Ferrer (Novice Latin and Pre-Amateur Latin).
“Our advocacy in our organization is to transform the youth through dance,” said Hayco. Their NGO is currently teaching around 30,000 kids in the province.
“Most of our students are in the depressed areas in Cebu and through dancesport, we want them to have self-confidence and self-respect,” he added.
National Capital Region (NCR) pocketed six gold medals led by German Enriquez and Ma. Danella Rence Publico in the Amateur Elite Standard and Stephanie Sabalo and Michael Angelo Marquez in Amateur Elite Latin.
“We gave attention to balance, partnering skills, musicality and wardrobe,” said Enriquez, who alongside partner Publico reached the semifinals in last year’s Asian Championships in Beijing and Asia Pacific Championships in Australia.
Enriquez, 31, and Publico, 21, have been competing together here and abroad for two years.
