Chess Olympiad: Philippines loses to Romania, ends stint at 21st place
Romania ended the Philippines’ hope to enter the top 10 in the 40th Istanbul Olympiad Sunday night, Manila time, as it crushed the Filipinos, 3-1, in the 11th and last round of the biennial event.
Eugene Torre and Mark Paragua lost against Levente Vajda and Vladislav Nevednichy while Wesley So and Oliver Barbosa drew their games against Constantin Lupuslescu and Mircea-Emilian Parligas.
The Philippines finished at 21st place. Armenia and Russia finished tied atop the leaderboard, but Armenia won gold on stronger tie-breaks. Ukraine finished with the bronze.
Russia’s women team won gold, China silver, and Ukraine bronze.
