Derek Ramsay, Philippine ultimate frisbee team compete in world championships

SMART TV5 Pilipinas, the Ultimate Frisbee national team, now ranks fifth in the qualifying stage of the 13th World Ultimate and Guts Championship 2012 (WUGC) being held in Osaka, Japan. The team has a current record of five wins and two losses during this round, besting countries like France, Russia and Germany.

The WUGC is a week-long competition that began last July 7 at the Sakai National Training Center.

The SMART TV5 Pilipinas team features Kapatid star Derek Ramsay and television host Reema Chanco as part of the mixed team. The team will compete in the single-elimination quarterfinals, where they will face champion team Australia. In the qualifying stage, the team played against some long-established squads including favorites USA, Hong Kong, the Netherlands, Japan, South Africa, Russia and France.

Former team captain Derek has also performed beyond expectations in the tournament, having landed as the ninth top scorer in the league. Teammate Kristian Guerrero is tied with Dutch player Marcel Pit at sixth place.

According to Derek, this is Ultimate Frisbee’s most awaited competition. He considers the WUGC his last appearance for the national team as he has been advised to retire after breaking his arm in a freak accident last year.

The WUGC, considered as the World Cup of Frisbee, is held every four years. The 2012 edition has drawn 25 participating countries with 71 teams competing in five divisions (Open, Womens, Mixed, Open Masters and Women Masters). This is the first time that the Philippines sent a national team to the prestigious event.
