The social networks are abuzz with screenshots from Manny Pacquiao’s third fight with Juan Manuel Marquez showing the Mexican fighter stepping on the foot of the Filipino champion.
Filipino fans are predictably up in arms, calling it a dirty tactic by Marquez:
It’s hard to imagine, however, that this had much of an effect this had on Pacquiao. If it did have a big impact, we’re pretty sure we would have heard about it from either the fighter or his trainer, Freddie Roach. We did hear about Pacquiao’s cramps.
It should be noted that boxers stepping on each other’s feet is a fairly common occurence in bouts between a southpaw fighter (like Pacquiao) and an orthodox fighter (Marquez), since both their lead feet are on the same side when facing each other.
Then again, getting his feet stomped is nothing new for Pacquiao either; against Joshua Clottey last year, the Ghanaian fighter was warned by Rafael Ramos for trying to step on Pacquiao’s foot.
