Drunk Ateneo player in viral video faces sanctions over ‘reprehensible’ behavior

A player from the Ateneo Blue Eagles is facing sanctions from his own alma mater after a video of him challenging someone to a fight in a middle of the road while drunk circulated on social media.

Ateneo sophomore forward John Apacible was caught flaunting a vanity plate bearing the word “councilor” as he got out of his car, apparently under the influence, and confronted the one who was taking the video that has gone viral.

The incident reportedly took place along Timog Avenue in Quezon City early Sunday morning.

Ateneo, through University Athletics Office Director Emmanuel Fernandez, said that Apacible has since apologized, although the player is expected to be slapped with penalties after the incident.

“It has come to our attention that John Apacible, a member of the Ateneo Blue Eagles, behaved in an unacceptable manner during an early Sunday morning encounter. John deeply regrets his reprehensible behavior and sincerely apologizes to all parties concerned,” Fernandez said in a statement.

“Rest assured that the Blue Eagles Team Management as well as the Loyola Schools will deal with this regrettable incident appropriately and swiftly.”
