Jovanie Simpron’s two goals in the first six minutes was all Stallion Giligan’s needed to fashion out a 2-1 victory over defending champion Philippine Air Force Phoenix, while league-leading Global continued its dominant run with a 4-0 beatdown of lowly Pasargad in United Football League action Saturday at University of Makati.
Simpron’s goals in the first and sixth minute proved to be insurmountable for the shorthanded Stallion, which was missing five regulars from its starting lineup. Glenn Bulaquina headed in a goal off a well-placed corner to cut the deficit to one at the 31st minute, but Air Force couldn’t find the equalizer as Stallion dominated possession for most of the rest of the match.
Simpron barely missed a hat trick after his second half goal was disallowed because he was ruled offside.
It was the second straight win for Stallion after a 2-nil victory over Philippine Navy Redjuice on Monday. The back-to-back wins revived the title chances of Stallion, which tumbled in the table following a long winless streak after a great start.
In the first game, Global showed no mercy against Pasargad, which was coming off a huge upset win over the Loyola Meralco Sparks in its last outing. After being held scoreless in the first half, Global rained four goals after the break. Izo Elhabib broke through for the first goal at the 48th minute, while Filipino-German Patrick Reichelt scored a brace with goals at the 73rd and 86th minute. Alex Obiang also scored for Global at the 73rd minute of play.
