Unsigned PBA draft pick Bong Galanza and ex-pro James Martinez made strong impressions after leading their respective clubs to contrasting victories in the PCBL Founders Cup on Friday night at the Filoil Flying V Arena.
The 6-foot-2 Galanza, who used to play for the University of the East in the UAAP, helped propel his Euro-Med team to an 89-84 win over Supremo Lex in a big debut win.
The former Red Warrior scored 23 points to lead the squad of coach Yong Garcia to a victory.
“Si Bong, ang sabi ko sa kanya dito siya mag-start kumuha ng kumpiyansa niya. Mayroon talaga siyang go-signal to take those shots. I’m happy talagang nag-respond naman si Bong,” said Garcia.
Galanza, who was selected in the 5th round of the 2015 PBA Draft, came up big in the endgame, hitting two triples that helped stave off a Supremo Lex’s rally.
He had one midway through the fourth quarter then hit another one in with 2:17 remaining, giving Euro-Med an 83-76 lead. The team was never seriously threatened from there.
But Euro-Med’s victory was nearly overshadowed by Jumbo Plastic after the latter notched an 88-75 demolition of Cagayan.
Martinez, another former UE player who played for Powerade Tigers in the PBA in the past, erupted for 27 big points in just 24 minutes of playing time. His stat line also included a 4-of-6 shooting clip from beyond the arc.
His steady performance helped Jumbo Plastic bounce back from its loss to Caida Tiles in its debut match.
Jeff Viernes added 16 markers as Jumbo’s guard rotation was able to pose problems for Cagayan.
But Jumbo Plastic coach Stevenson Tiu is still far from satisfied despite the win.
“Hindi pa naming nakukuha yung chemistry sa mga players. Marami diyan mga star players, yung iba naglaro pa sa PBA. Kung sino nakakahawak ng bola, medyo nang-gigigil pa. Pero yung adjustment period pa rin kailangan. Maski na maaga kami nagensayo, iba pa rin yung actual game,” said Tiu.
