Filipino paddlers hope for better results in SEA Games

Canoe-kayak’s Danny Funelas hopes to bring the Philippines its first gold medal even before the opening of 2011 Southeast Asian Games officially begins in Indonesia.

That is because Funelas will vie for a gold medal hours before the opening ceremonies set on November 11 as he competes in the canoe 1000-meter singles event.

Funelas will seek for one of the five gold medals at stake during the canoe-kayak opener in Cipule Lake in West Java on Friday

Philippine Canoe Kayak Federation secretary-general Jonne Go said that Funelas is their best bet in the SEA Games following a seventh place finish in the Asian Championships last month — better than the Vietnamese and Indonesian bets during that event.

Funelas will also see action in the canoe 200-meter singles, 200-meter doubles and 1000-meter doubles, where he will team up with Norwell Cajes.

The canoe-kayak team hopes to improve on their lone silver medal in 2005 won by Jeremiah Tambor.

Also included in the team are twins Alex and Alvin Generalao, who are set to see action in the K2 1,000-meter and K2 200-meter. Alex will also be competing in the kayak-single 1,000-meter and kayak-single 200-meter.

Chess, football, sepak takraw and water polo will also play their games on the day of the opening ceremonies.
