The Philippine national dragon boat team paddled home with six gold and one silver medal in the International Canoe Federation (ICF) Dragon Boat World Championships in Milan, Italy.
The national squad organized by the Philippine Canoe-Kayak Federation (PCKF) took home gold medals in the 10-seater men’s 500m, 10-seater mixed 500m, 20-seater mixed 500m, 10 seater men’s 200m, 20-seater mixed 200m, and 10-seater mixed 200m. The team also took home the silver in the 20-seater mixed 500m event.
The PCKF squad is the recognized national team by the Philippine Olympic Committee, and is different from the Philippine Dragon Boat Federation squad that competed in the World Nations Championships organized by the International Dragon Boat Federation (IDBF) in Tampa, Florida last year.
The ICF and the IDBF are at odds over which organization should be recognized as the legitimate world governing body for the sport of dragon boat. The two groups run two different world championship events.
