DAVAO CITY — Barangay Ginebra San Miguel rookie Chris Ellis is the overwhelming favorite to win this year’s PBA slam dunk contest, former winners of the competition agree.
“Si Chris Ellis ‘yan,” Canaleta told InterAKTV in an exclusive interview. “Walang kalabang mabigat eh. Grabe nga raw yung preparation na ginagawa niya sa ensayo sabi ng mga teammates niya.”
Canaleta, a five-time slam dunk champion, has retired from the event after winning last year. He will try his hand at the three-point competition instead.
Another former dunk king, Cyrus Baguio who won the title in Cebu City in 2004, thinks Ellis has an edge based on what the Ginebra rookie does during games.
“Mas may grace yung dunks niya,” Baguio said. “Si Japeth maganda rin sana kung kasali siya, pero mas maganda tingnan kay Ellis yung form pati yung pag-execute niya, so siya sa tingin ko yung mananalo.”
Ellis, meanwhile, will try to live up to the hype.
“I’m excited. I just hope I could live up to expectations,” said Ellis.
The dunk competition is scheduled on Friday before the Greats versus Stalwarts game that will pit PBA legends along with current stars.
