Fr. Martin Summer Cup: Altas, Bullpups, Red Warriors advance to quarters

The University of Perpetual Help Altas and the National University Bullpups disposed of their respective rivals Tuesday to make it to the next stage of the 18th Fr. Martin Summer Cup basketball tournament.

The Altas limited the Informatics Icons to just 10 points in the first period, and posted a 70-61 edging which earned them the last quarterfinal slot in Group B of the men’s division at the St. Placid gymnasium of the San Beda College-Manila campus.

The Bullpups, behind Exequiel Biteng, knocked the Adamson Baby Falcons out of contention, 72-68, to earn the remaining semis berth in Group B of the junior action.

Scott Thompson and Femi Babayemi hit 13 and 12 points respectively for the Altas, who led by as much as 22 points in the third quarter before finishing the elimination round with a 5-2 win-loss record.

The Las Pinas-based Altas placed fourth even if they tied the Far Eastern University Tamaraws and the La Salle Green Archers, who earned the second and third Group B seats with the same 5-2 cards.

Biteng delivered 18 of 28 points in the second half, and his efforts helped the Bullpups finish with a 6-2 slate in Group B, and join the Ateneo Blue Eaglets (6-1) in the semis.

In other games, the University of the East Red Warriors (5-2) formally reached the quarterfinals after they won over the University of the Philippines Maroons, 72-68, in Group A.

La Salle Zobel prevailed over the University of Santo Tomas Tiger Cubs, 70-61, to end their campaign with a 4-2 record in the junior division.
