Fr. Martin’s Summer Cup set to open with juniors, women’s games

A five-game bill featuring games in the women’s and junior divisions kick off the opening games of the 18th Fr. Martin Summer Cup, which starts this Sunday at the Dom Placid gymnasium inside the San Beda College-Mendiola campus.

Last year’s finalist San Beda-A takes the place of the Chiang Kai Shek Blazing Dragons in the 12 noon main event, which is a showdown with the University of Santo Tomas Tiger Cubs.

The Blazing Dragons, who will play members of the team which steered them to the Metro Manila Tiong Lian crown, called off their opening day game after key players joined a 13-man Tiong Lian All-Star selection which went to Taiwan for a series of exhibition games.

The rest of the scheduled matches remain, with the Adamson Baby Falcons clashing with the National College of Business and Arts Junior Wildcats at 9 a.m.

The Jose Rizal University Light Bombers takes on the Jesus Is Lord Christian Foundation cagers at 10:30 a.m.

In the women’s division, the Ateneo Lady Eagles will slug it out with the Our Lady of Fatima University Lady Phoenix at 1:30 while the Lyceum Philippine University Lady Pirates take on the Far Eastern University Lady Tamaraws at 3 p.m.

A total of 40 school teams are taking part in this three-monthlong cagefest, and this includes 16 collegiate men’s teams, 18 high school boys squads and six women’s quintets.

The tournament is considered as the country’s oldest preseason collegiate cagefest.

UAAP seniors and juniors champion Ateneo de Manila and NCAA juniors titlist San Beda College will be participating, along with UAAP campaigners De La Salle University, Far Eastern University, Adamson and the University of the East.

NCAA campaigners Letran, Perpetual Help and JRU are also included.
