The Philippines is now the third best basketball team in Asia after moving up three spots in the FIBA World Rankings released this week.
Gilas Pilipinas rose to 28th place from 31st, behind China (14th) and Iran (17th).
The Filipinos are coming off a silver medal finish in the FIBA Asia Championship last week.
China won the tournament gold and also an automatic ticket to the 2016 Rio Olympics after beating Gilas Pilipinas in the final, while erstwhile champion Iran settled for bronze.
FIBA released the new rankings after all of the continental championships were finished. Team USA remained as the best team in the world, followed by European champion Spain, Lithuania, Argentina and France.
Perlas Pilipinas also climbed up in the world ladder following its successful campaign in the FIBA Asia Women’s Championship.
The Filipinas were one of the biggest movers in the rankings, improving from 58th to 49th. Only Egypt (60th) enjoyed the same surge.
Perlas Pilipinas earned promotion to Level 1 in FIBA Asia Women’s Championship next year after its impressive stint in this year’s edition of the tournament.
