United Football League champion Global FC has added another competition to its calendar as the squad will make its debut in the 2013 Singapore Cup this May, an invitational football club tournament based in the city-state.
Team owner Dan Palami confirmed the news to InterAKTV, making the squad busy next month as Global will also play in the 2013 Asian Football Confederation President’s Cup in Cebu also in May, a tournament featuring champion football clubs from emerging football nations in Asia.
Another UFL squad, the Loyola Meralco Sparks, will make its second trip to the Singapore Cup this year, marking the first time that the Philippines will send two representatives in an international club competition.
The annual Singapore Cup features clubs from the city-state’s local league, the S.League, and teams from abroad, mostly from Southeast Asia, to compete in a knockout tournament.
The Sparks also joined the Singapore Cup last year and made history after becoming the first Philippine squad to participate in an club tournament abroad. They reached the semifinals and finished a respectable fourth place in the 16-team competition.
