United Football League champion Global FC made another high-profile move in an effort to beef up its lineup for the Asian Football Confederation President’s Cup this May.
Global signed highly-touted national team striker Joshua Beloya, who helped Ceres FC of Negros Occidental to win the Philippine Football Federation-SMART National Club Championships this year.
“thank you guys! excited to play for the superstrong UFL team @GlobalFC_PHL” Beloya wrote on his Twitter account.
Beloya is no stranger to UFL action, having suited up for Kaya FC during its League runner-up run last year. He made headlines during the 2011 Southeast Asian Games in Indonesia, when he scored back-to-back goals in the dying minutes to lift the Philippine squad to a 3-2 comeback victory over Laos.
The President’s Cup is a tournament among champion clubs from emerging football nations in Asia. It imposes a limit on foreign players on each team, forcing Global, which currently has eight imports, to beef up its roster with local players.
Aside from Beloya, Global has recently added Jason De Jong and Eduard Sacapaño in an effort to bolster its lineup in time for the competition.
Global will represent the country in the Philippines’ first appearance in the tournament, set at the Cebu City Sports Center this May.
