Defending United Football League champion Global FC has tapped Philippine national football team defender Juani Guirado for its campaign in the Asian Football Confederation President’s Cup in Cebu next week.
The Filipino-Spanish Guirado, who plays third-division football in Spain, signed with Global last year and became part of the squad’s League title run last season. He eventually returned to his hometown to pursue his career there.
Apart from seeing action for Global during the UFL Cup last year, Guirado is also one of the key players for the Azkals, providing steady presence at the backline.
“Juani will help us with his experience aside from the fact that he’s also played with some of the players in the squad,” Global owner Dan Palami told the club’s official website.
“We really focused on improving our defense because we expect a lot of good attacking players in the tournament and it’s important for us not to concede goals.”
Global will face Yeedzin FC of Bhutan on May 8, Khan Research Laboratories FC of Pakistan on May 10, and two-time champion Dordoi Bishkek of Kyrgyzstan on May 12 at the Cebu City Sports Center in Group B of the tournament.
The top two teams from the group will advance to the final stages of the President’s Cup in September.
