Defending United Football League champion Global FC pulled off a 2-0 victory against Warriors FC in its debut in the 2013 Singapore Cup Saturday night at the Choa Chu Kang Stadium in the city-state.
Global made a splash after eliminating the reigning Singapore Cup champion. Warriors FC won the competition last year under its former name, Singapore Armed Forces FC.
New striker Jordan Robertson lifted Global to a 2-nil halftime lead which they held throughout the game. The first goal came at the 33rd minute, with the English forward dishing an assist to Misagh Bahadoran, who hit the back of the net.
Robertson then padded the lead quickly, slotting a goal after a poor clearance by Warriors at the 37th minute to give Global a comfortable lead.
Global advanced to the quarterfinals, which is expected to be played in July. It joined fellow UFL squad Loyola Meralco Sparks, which won against Harimau Muda B last week, in the next round of the competition.
The Singapore Cup is an annual invitational tournament featuring clubs from the S.League and teams abroad, mostly from Southeast Asia.
