HOTSHOTS UNLEASHED? | Yeng Guiao wary of Star under new coach Jason Webb: ‘Mas nakakatakot silang kalaban’
Rain or Shine coach Yeng Guiao, whose team will get first crack at Star under its new mentor Jason Webb, admitted that he remains wary of facing the Hotshots, maybe even more so than when they were under their former coach, Tim Cone.
Though it may take some time for Star get used to its new coach, the Hotshots have the potential to be a very dangerous opponent, according to Guiao.
“Maybe hindi pa sila naga-acclimatize ngayon, pero in the long run, mas nakakatakot silang kalaban,” he told InterAksyon.com in a telephone interview.
The fiery coach said that the personnel on Star’s roster are better fits for a more free-flowing style than the structured triangle offense that the team ran under Cone.
“Mas nakakatakot yun kapag ganun ang nangyari. Their talent will be unleashed because of the fast-pace style, free flowing. Kapag pinawalaan mo yung talent na yun, mas mahirap sila kalaban. Yung fast-pace game ang gustong-gusto nina (Mark) Barroca, nina PJ (Simon), James Yap and Alex Mallari.”
“Mas lumaki rin sila and bumata.”
Guiao – whose Rain or Shine team had met Cone’s Star squad three times in the finals, all of them going the Hotshots’ way, including the 2014 Governors’ Cup title that gave the old Purefoods franchise the rare Grand Slam – believes that the Star players needed to make adjustments to their games to fit in with Cone’s philosophies but the individual talent was evident even then – and could be utilized even more this season.
“They are a Grand Slam team. Kung kay Coach Tim nagawa nilang isakripisyo yung talent nila just to fit into the structured offense lalo pa kaya ngayon kapag pinawalaan mo na,” he added.
Rookie head coach Webb, whose father Freddie was a former Olympian and was one the better guards that Philippine basketball has ever seen, could lean towards a more fast-paced, no-letup style of play that his surname is known for, according to Guiao.
“Sa tingin ko mas mananaig pa rin yung genes na kinalakihan ni Jason kaysa sa sistema na na-introduce sa kanya sa coaching when he joined Coach Tim’s coaching staff,” the veteran coach said.
