Many basketball observers have noted some similarities in the on-court movements between San Mig Coffee superstar James Yap and Petron Blaze rookie center June Mar Fajardo — a curious comparison considering the two men play different positions.
Even Fajardo has heard the whispers, and he is also dumbfounded about them.
“Hindi ko nga alam bakit nila ako tinatawag na James Yap,” he wrote in a text message to InterAKTV.
Fajardo clarified that his true basketball idol is another two-time PBA Most Valuable Player: Petron teammate Danny Ildefonso.
“Magaling si James Yap, pero dahil big man ako, si Danny I ang idol ko.”
Fajardo was happy to have been drafted by the Boosters, which gave him the chance to play alongside his basketball hero. Ildefonso has been sidelined by a shoulder injury, but still manages to tutor Fajardo on post moves during practice.
“Yung mga head and shoulder fake niya and yung attitude niya sa paglalaro ang mga gusto ko sa kanya,” said Fajardo.
“Pero ang gusto kong ma-master, yung itinurong jump hook ni Danny I.”
