Knights earn Fr. Martin Summer Cup quarters; Baby Falcons, Lady Pirates clinch seats
The Letran Knights, the Adamson Baby Falcons and the Lyceum Philippines University Lady Pirates continued their winning ways last Sunday and clinched quarterfinal slots in the 18th Fr. Martin Summer Cup basketball tournament.
Mark Cruz tallied 22 points and spearheaded the Knights to a 75-68 beating of the University of Perpetual Help-Dalta Altas and their sixth consecutive triumph at the St. Placid gymnasium of the San Beda-Manila campus in Mendiola.
John Margallo unloaded 22 points for the Baby Falcons, who walloped Naga Montessori, 87-40, in the junior division for their fifth straight victory in Group B of the secondary division.
Frances Mae Cabinbin and Janelle Mendoza made 18 and 14 points for the Lyceum Lady Pirates, who demolished the Our Lady of Fatima University Lady Phoenix, 76-64, and moved into the women’s quarterfinals with their 3-1 slate.
Cruz poured in nine points in the second quarter, allowing the Knights to take a 14-point, 36-22 halftime advantage, and move a win away from sweeping Group B.
The Knights joined the early qualifying Ateneo-A Blue Eagles in the quarterfinals.
The Baby Falcons are in the quarterfinals with the Our Lady of Fatima University Junior Phoenix, who finished the eliminations with a 6-1 berth.
In other varsity encounters, the Altas (3-2) dropped to a share of second spot with the La Salle Green Archers, who got 12 and 11 points from Joshua Webb and Mark Jayven Tallo and put away the Ateneo-B Blue Eagles, 67-56.
Nate Matute banged in 24 points for the Jose Rizal University Heavy Bombers, who prevailed over the Lyceum Philippines University Pirates, 92-66, to improved their slate in Group A at 3-2.
In Group B, Rodolfo Carlos and Jason Ibay scored crucial baskets in the last 13 seconds to lead Informatics past the Philippine Merchant Marine School Mariners, 73-70, and they share the same 3-2 record with the Heavy Bombers.
