La Salle netters dominate UAAP opening weekend
La Salle asserted its dominance in the UAAP tennis competitions after its men’s and women’s teams swept the first round in weekend matches at the Rizal Memorial Tennis Center.
The Green Archers narrowly defeated their finals opponent last season University of Santo Tomas, 3-2, behind the lopsided victory of Alberto Villamor in the final singles match.
Villamor routed Al Potutan, 6-1, 6-1, to clinch the tie for the Green Archers to hike their mark to 4-0.
The Lady Archers beat Ateneo by the same scoreline, 3-2, to also sweep their three assignments in the women’s division.
Last season’s Most Valuable Player Regina Santiago outclassed Bea Santos, 6-0, 6-0, in the final singles match of the tie after Martina Guba defeated Isabelle Lim, 6-0, and Trudy Amoranto and Kirstie Barraquias downed Nikki Angelo and Jessica Lagman, 6-1, 6-1.
In other men’s matches, National University swept Ateneo, 5-0, to capture its third win in four matches. University of the East beat University of the Philippines, 3-2, as both teams ended the first round with a similar 2-2 win-loss card.
UP grabbed second place in the women’s competitions with a 3-2 victory over University of Santo Tomas. It was the Lady Maroons’ second win in three matches while the Tigresses downed to 1-2.
