La Salle turns back UST, sweeps UAAP women’s volleyball 1st round

La Salle completed a first round sweep of UAAP women’s volleyball competitions, but not before outlasting a hard-fighting University of Santo Tomas, 20-25, 25-22, 16-25, 25-19, 17-15, Sunday at the Fil Oil-Flying V Arena in San Juan.

Abigail Marano finished with 18 points, Charleen Cruz had 17 and Michelle Gumabao tallied 16 as the defending champion Lady Archers claimed all seven wins at the end of the first round doing it against their finals tormentor last year.

But the Lady Archers had to sweat it out before claiming the victory.

La Salle trailed, 3-8, on a Mika Reyes service error as a predominantly UST crowd cheered the Tigresses on an impending victory.

The Lady Archers, however, fought their way back saving matchpoint at 14-13 to force an extension before finally pulling off the win when Gumabao scored the winning point with a down-the-line attack.

The Tigresses took fourth spot with a 4-3 win-loss slate with one playing day remaining on Wednesday before the end of the the first round.

In the first game, University of the East ended its three-game drought defeating University of the Philippines, 13-25, 25-19, 27-25, 25-14.

Jimberly Dawn Dizon and Sheisa Nebrida chipped in 13 points while Leuseht Dawis had nine for the Lady Warriors.

UE finished its first round campaign with a 2-5 win-loss record while UP dropped all its seven games of the first round.
